In the Lot region, which takes its name by the river that crosses it,
the province of Quercy is stony and arid up on the Causses but rich and
fertile in the alluvial valleys. The river Lot flows through plains planted
with vines, dotted with castels and villages such as Saint Cirq Lapopie,
which stands perched on a cliff 80 meters above the river.
Described as one of the 'most beautiful villages in France', this medieval
village is made up of a network of ancient streets, fine residences and
lovely old houses. Classified by the Historical Monuments Society
in 1930, St. Cirq Lapopie has remained amazingly intact in spite of its
turbulent past.
It's lovely old walls have captivated the imagination of many people
including numerous artists like the surrealist poet Andre Breton
and painters such as Pierre Daura, Henri Martin and Joseph Rignault.
St.Cirq Lapopie and its beautiful homes have been preserved and restroed
through the years. A diverse community of local inhabitants and those
who have come to adopt St Cirq Lapopie, inhabit and work in the village.
